CHAMPAGNE SPECIALIST - UNDERSTANDING AND RECOMMENDING CHAMPAGNE

An advance training course with tastings and fun workshops that lead to recognised certification. 

 

IMPORTANT

This certification is aimed at professionals, sommeliers, wine-industry workers and wine enthusiasts with a strong understanding of wine, including: wine shop staff, catering professionals, food distribution professionals, executives/buyers/sellers in the wine and spirits sector, wine industry professionals, tourism professionals, wine journalists, importers, wine trainers, students in the hotel, catering and luxury goods industries, etc.

 

Pre-requisite: min 2 years in the service industry, CMS-Introductory Certificate, WSET Level 2 Certificate - or - complete our 'Comprehensive Preparation Course'.

 

The two-day Champagne Specialist Course, certified by the Comité Champagne will deepen your expertise in the world of Champagne.

Therefore the basic understanding of wine making is already expected. Basic terms will not be explained in this course. 

 

> The course is currently only available in English - we will offer this program later on this year in German language as well. 

 

The total duration of the certification program is 21 hours, of which 14 hours are face-to-face + 7 hours self-study time.

 

The 7 hours of preparation and self-study time includes: 

  • Complete the Champagne MOOC
  • Careful reading of the Learner’s Guide for the Champagne Specialist course

 

Course Structure

Day 1 (9:00 – 18:00) lays the foundation with an in-depth exploration of Champagne’s history, production methods, and tasting techniques.

Day 2 (9:00 – 18:00) takes your knowledge further, focusing on food pairings and recommendation strategies. The course concludes with a certification exam from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, equipping you with the confidence to expertly discuss and recommend Champagne.

 

Training objectives

  • Understand and interpret Champagne labels
  • Know how to describe and assess Champagne wines
  • Know how to store and serve Champagne in optimum conditions
  • Be able to recommend a Champagne by ascertaining the customer’s expectations and needs and drawing up an appropriate range of suggestions
  • Know how to pair food and Champagne

The assessment

Theory test – 1 hour

        - 30 multiple-choice questions (30 minutes - 30 points)

        - 2 open questions (30 minutes - 30 points)

 

Practical test – 45 minutes

  • Tasting of two identified Champagne wines (40 points)
  • Description of the characteristics of the Champagne tasted
  • Presentation of a sales argument to promote this Champagne
  • Suggestion and explanation of a harmonious food and Champagne pairing

 

Marking scheme

    Less than 54%: Fail

    From 55% to 69%: Pass

    From 70% to 79%: Good

    Above 80%: Excellent
